2024 Winner – Best Industrial Design – Luminar Halo
Pitch:
Luminar’s leading lidar technology enables next-generation global automotive safety. With lidar we imagine robotaxis. Our strategy doesn’t eliminate the driver but enhances them. We have designed the most advanced lidar ever made–motivated by our mission: Save 100 million lives and 100 trillion hours over the next 100 years.
Overview:
Luminar Halo can see farther and more precisely than any of today’s ADAS or lidar solutions. Our HW+SW enables enhanced safety using 3D laser sight even in extreme conditions, including blinding light and pitch black. This unlocks the potential to make millions of vehicles nearly uncrashable, democratizing safety. Automotive sensors aren’t aesthetically considered since they are often covered by body panels. Luminar Halo is the first lidar sensor designed where the technology could be visually celebrated. The housing is a post-milled aircraft-grade aluminum casting with a multi-layer anodization to achieve both a beautiful and corrosion-resistant finish. Halo’s taper toward the back aids aerodynamics when integrated into a roofline, providing near zero drag coefficient. Because it’s so small (25mm slim) and ultralight (0.75kg) compared to its predecessor, it is the first lidar to be integrated behind the windshield. Aesthetically, the vehicle’s silhouette will be left untouched and its aerodynamic impact at zero. Additionally, cleaning and clearing debris from the lidar’s field of view is naturally within the car’s wiper path. Halo is also the first lidar to house its own thermal control system which allows it to perform at even the most extreme temperatures. Luminar Halo is also IP68 water resistant.
Why:
The Silicon Valley UX Awards (SVUXA) proudly announces Luminar Halo as the 2024 Winner for Best Industrial Design. This award celebrates Luminar’s innovation in embracing Simplicity, Engagement, Empathy, and Design Aesthetics, setting a new benchmark for lidar technology in the automotive industry. The Luminar Halo is not only a breakthrough in safety and performance but also a triumph of design, creating a lidar sensor that is both technologically advanced and visually stunning.
Simplicity in Performance and Integration
Luminar Halo is designed to provide unparalleled simplicity in functionality and vehicle integration. The sensor’s hardware and software offer 3D laser sight capabilities that operate seamlessly even in extreme conditions, such as blinding sunlight or complete darkness. This advanced lidar technology allows vehicles to achieve enhanced safety, unlocking the potential for millions of cars to become nearly uncrashable.
Halo’s small size (25mm slim) and ultralight weight (0.75kg) make it the first lidar sensor to be integrated behind the windshield. This innovation eliminates the need for body panel modifications, allowing for a clean, unobtrusive installation that doesn’t alter the vehicle’s aesthetic or aerodynamic profile. By keeping the vehicle’s silhouette untouched and ensuring zero aerodynamic impact, Luminar has redefined simplicity in automotive sensor integration.
Engaging Design that Celebrates Technology
Unlike traditional automotive sensors hidden behind body panels, Luminar Halo embraces its technology as a design feature. The post-milled aircraft-grade aluminum casting is treated with a multi-layer anodization process, achieving a finish that is not only beautiful but also corrosion-resistant. This innovative design choice transforms Halo into a visually celebrated component rather than a concealed necessity.
When integrated into the roofline, the sensor’s taper toward the back improves aerodynamics, providing a near-zero drag coefficient. By designing Halo as an aesthetically engaging and functional element, Luminar has created a lidar sensor that adds visual value to a vehicle rather than detracting from it. This new approach highlights how technology and design can enhance form and function.
Empathy for the User and Environment
Empathy is at the core of Luminar Halo’s design philosophy. Recognizing the importance of maintaining a vehicle’s aesthetic integrity, Luminar designed Halo to be nearly invisible when installed behind the windshield, preserving the sleek look of modern vehicles. Additionally, by positioning the sensor within the car’s wiper path, Luminar has ensured that cleaning and clearing debris from the sensor’s field of view is a seamless, natural process, reducing the need for specialized maintenance.
Halo’s built-in thermal control system allows it to perform reliably in extreme temperatures, ensuring the lidar remains functional in all weather conditions. The sensor’s IP68 water resistance further enhances its durability, demonstrating Luminar’s commitment to creating a product that meets the environment’s and users’ demands. These thoughtful design elements showcase Luminar’s empathy for the end user, ensuring that Halo integrates effortlessly into its driving experience.
Design Aesthetics that Set a New Standard
Luminar Halo’s design aesthetics elevate it beyond a technical component into a statement of innovation. The sleek, corrosion-resistant aluminum housing serves a functional purpose and enhances the sensor’s visual appeal. Its compact and ultralight form allows it to blend seamlessly into the vehicle’s design, maintaining its original silhouette’s elegance and aerodynamic efficiency.
By considering every detail, from the tapered shape for aerodynamic efficiency to the refined finish of the materials, Luminar has created a product that exemplifies the best industrial design. The combination of beauty and function ensures that Halo is as visually striking as it is technologically advanced.
Revolutionizing Automotive Safety and Design
The Luminar Halo is more than just a lidar sensor; it’s a revolutionary step forward in automotive safety and design. By integrating cutting-edge technology with an empathetic, user-focused design approach, Luminar has created a product that enhances safety and elevates vehicles’ aesthetic and functional qualities. Halo’s combination of Simplicity, Engagement, Empathy, and Design Aesthetics sets a new standard for the industry and showcases the potential of technology as an integral part of design.
The 2024 Silicon Valley UX Awards congratulates Luminar Halo for its outstanding achievement in industrial design. The sensor’s innovative integration of hardware, software, and design aesthetics exemplifies what is possible when technology is celebrated as a core element of product design.
Congratulations, Luminar Halo, on winning the Best Industrial Design at the 2024 SVUXA. Your dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive technology and design continues to shape the future of intelligent mobility!
